Louisville Tournament Opponent Preview: First Round

Posted: March 14, 2011 by Bacon in Freak Stuff

Cards fans are split down the middle after hearing Louisville’s seeding on Sunday. While some fans were upset they got just a 4-seed, behind a 3-seeded Syracuse after getting to the Big East title game. Others, like myself, were just happy to finish the season strong enough to get a 4-seed. Coming into the year the nightmare of last season was still fresh in mind and was thought to maybe repeat itself this season.

Louisville’s first round opponent is a rematch from two years ago but much has changed since the Cards beat Morehead State twice in that season. Once in the regular season and again as a #1 seed versus a #16 seed.

This game has upset written all over it and Louisville fans have every right to be nervous. The Cards have struggled this year stopping teams from owning them on the boards. So when you have a first round match-up against a team that has the nation’s best rebounder the last two years on their team, cold sweats begin.

That man is of course Kenneth Faried. Faried grabbed a nation leading 14.5 rebounds a game to go along with his team leading 17.5 points a game. The Eagles are led by their big man and fellow Senior Demonte Harper, an athletic guard who averaged 16 points a game.

Both Faried and Harper were just Sophomores starters when Louisville beat them two years ago. Now if history tells the result of this game Louisville fans should be able to enjoy day one of the tournament. Morehead State is 0-11 life-time against the Cardinals, including 0-2 in the NCAA tournament (1984 and 2009). Morehead State is coached by Donnie Tyndall, who has done a great job getting life back into the program after taking over for Kyle Macey five years ago. Tyndall has the Eagles in their second tournament appearance in his first five years, not a bad feat for a school who hadn’t been to the big dance since 1984 when they returned in 2009.

Louisville has more overall talent then Morehead State, as do most 4-seeds compared to 13-seeds but that means nothing. Starting five versus starting five only Morehead State is just as good as this Cardinal team and that must scare Coach Pitino. Morehead State didn’t shy away from big name schools in their out of conference schedule. Traveling to Florida and Ohio State. While the Buckeyes won going away ( 64-45 ), the Gators struggled with the Ohio Valley champions, winning a close game 61-55.  Faried averaged 17 points in those two games and 15 rebounds. Showing you he is ready to bang with the big boys. I think Louisville will win this game but it will not be easy, as the Cards will advance but not by much in this first round game. Remember last years Ohio Valley champion, Murray State knocked off 4-seeded Vanderbilt and missed a shot at the buzzer to beat eventual national runner-up Butler.
