Kentucky Tournament Opponent Preview:First Round

Posted: March 14, 2011 by Bacon in Kentucky Basketball, Outside the Ville
Wildcat fans felt like they got a raw deal getting a 4-seed after winning the SEC title and maybe they did but all the complaining will not make Princeton roll over and die. For those who don’t know this is not your typical Princeton team.
The Tigers have been known, while being coached by legend Pete Carril and John Thompson III as a slow down methodical offense. If that is what you are expecting to see that from Sydney Johnson’s Tigers team you are in for a shock.

Princeton teams in the past used undersized soft big men who were decent shooters and passers from the high post. A key in the back door cutting offense they employed.  You won’t get that stereotype from Tigers leading scorer and rebounder Kareem Maddox. At 13 points and 7 rebounds a game, the 6’8 230 pound Maddux is more comfortable on the low block. Princeton surrounds their Senior leader with fellow Senior guard Dan Mavraides (12.7  ppg), Junior guard Douglas Davis ( 11.9 ppg ), and Sophomore forward Ian Hummer ( 13.9 ppg & 6.7 rpg ).

This will mark the second year in a row John Calipari and Kentucky will face the Ivy league champions. Last season UK rolled past Cornell in the sweet-sixteen 62-45. This will be the first time in 33 years these two teams have faced each other. The last meeting also came in the first round of the East region in 1977, when UK handled the Tigers 72-58. Overall the Wildcats are 2-1 versus the Tigers with Princeton’s only win coming in 1926…an exciting 30-26 win.

You can’t talk about Princeton without showing this video. Current coach Sydney Johnson was a active member of this team.

Kentucky fans have been upset over where they were placed and the seed they received but don’t get worried just yet. UK should roll over Princeton in this game and give the Cat fans at least day one of this tournament time to sit back and relax.
