Happy 25th Birthday to the city of Louisville's own Rajon Rondo

I usually despise any and everything that currently wear or have worn a Kentucky uniform. I can not say that about Rajon Rondo. Brutally misused in the minds of most under Tubby Smith with the Wildcats, Rondo could have worn the red and black had Rick Pitino known Sebastian Telfair was going to jump to the NBA and not been so enamored by the NYC PG. Most close to him would tell you Rajon chose Kentucky simply for the fact that Louisville put all their eggs in Telfair’s basket. Rondo has turned into one of the most exciting players in the league, a perennial all-star and possible Hall of Famer with the Celtics which is something everyone from the state of Kentucky, regardless of affiliation, should be proud of. Cardinal fans can only wonder Rajon would have looked like playing for Pitino along with a few other recruiting casualties.

Buzzworthy…

Carmelo Anthony traded to the Knicks along with Chauncey Billups and a few others for what seems like everyone on the team except for A’mare and Landry Fields. Knicks are probably still paying Allan Houston, so maybe they could get him to come back for the second half of the year (Sports Illustrated)

– Scoop Jardine scored 20 with 6 assists and Rick Jackson added 18 points as Syracuse beat Villanova last night to cloud the top half of the Big East even more. There is only a 4 game gap between first place PITT and 11th place Marquette. If your ever going to MSG, this would be the year (Syracuse.com)

Duke is the new #1 in both polls this week for no reason but the name on the front of their jersey. Yea, they were the only top 5 team not to lose this week, but they also have only had to beat 1 top 25 team all season. PITT somehow dropped to 6th after losing by 1 at St. John’s where Duke lost by 25. Thank God the poll doesn’t count in this sport. (ESPN)

This Day in Sports…

February 22, 1980 – The US Olympic hockey team defeats the big bad Russians in what is famously known as “The Miracle on Ice”. Thanks to a bunch of hockey players, we are still looking at Al Michaels’ spray tan and fake hair 31 years later. Thanks hockey!

Haters gonna hate Rob. Duke is a legitimate Number 1 boasting probably the national player of the year Nolan Smith (I would also be inclined to put Norris Cole in this spot and possibly Kemba Walker had he not fallen off a bit midseason). Since Kyrie Irving went down, they had to completely revamp their style of play. They had some struggles, but not many and Smith is playing out of his mind. There is no team that can stop his penetration. Kyle Singler is a great all around player, and Seth Curry & Ryan Kelly have stepped up as legitimate third options. What makes them any less deserving of the #1 spot? It is not their fault that they don’t play in the big east and the acc isn’t that good this year. It is not their fault that everyone team in front of them lost. It’s not their jersey that warranted them anything. They are a really good team, not great. But there aren’t any great teams out there. The top 8 and possibly 14 teams aren’t separated by much, which will make this a wonderful tourney to watch and a terrible tourney to pick. I just find it upsetting when people immediately think Duke gets everything because they are Duke. Love them, or hate them, they earn it no differently than anyone else- playing their butts off and loving the game.
