Bacon Bits: Battle For Most Putrid

Posted: February 18, 2011 by Bacon in Outside the Ville

When I came home last night to find out my options on ESPN and ESPN2 were games between Alabama/LSU and Providence/DePaul it got me to thinking….who is the worst team in the power conferences ( Big East, Big Ten, Pac 10, Big 12, SEC, ACC ) this season.  Now it was cool to see DePaul FINALLY get a conference win last night but that doesn’t mean it will keep them off the top of my list. Several things helped me compile my list, overall and conference record, embarrassing losses, lack of competitiveness,  and just my basic opinion from watching them play cause sad but true each one of these teams I have watched play at least once or more. So I’ve done the homework and put together my 5 worst teams….

#5 – Arizona State Sun Devils

Unlike the other teams that will make this list, Herb Sendek’s team doesn’t have a loss to a team that makes you say “Who!?!”. The Sun Devils are coming off three straight 20+ win seasons but that mean little this year as they are a sad 9-16 overall while just 1-12 in Pac-10 play. They are ranked 290th in points per game, 304th in rebounds per game, and 239th in field goal percentage. Is it any wonder 9 of their 16 losses have been by 10 points or more.

#4 – LSU Tigers

At 2-9 in a bad SEC West and 10-16 overall is there any doubt that head coach Trent Johnson may soon have the phrase “ex” in front of his title. The Tigers have fallen to Nicholls State ( 5-6 in Southland conference ), North Texas ( 6-6 in Sun Belt ), and Rice ( 3-8 in CUSA ). Ranked 305th in points per game, 194th in rebounds per game, 284th in assists per game, and 317th in field goal percentage. Hell the Tigers have 5 games losing by 20 or more points, four of them in the SEC.

#3 – DePaul Blue Demons

Did snapping their 24 game conference losing streak last night help move them up this list? A little but 1st year coach Oliver Purnell’s team did almost beat West Virginia, Cincinnati, and Louisville this season. Also I consider the fact that the Big East is the toughest conference from top to bottom in keeping them out of the top two but that doesn’t mean this team doesn’t suck. DePaul is 7-18 overall, 1-12 in Big East while ranking 214th in points per game and 318th in rebounds per game. Losing to Cal-State Northridge by 22 and a Larry Bird less Indiana State squad by 22 is not what you want to see on your resume though, unless you’re hoping to make this list of course.

#2 – Wake Forest Demon Deacons

What happens when you fire a coach ( Dino Gaudio )  for underachieving despite winning having back-to-back 20+ win seasons for a guy (  Jeff Bzdelik )who is coming off a three-year stint at Colorado where he was 36-98? I’ll tell you what. You get a 8-18 record ( 1-10 in ACC ),a loss to a 7-21 Stetson team, a 12 point loss to North Carolina-Wilmington ( 13-14 overall), and a loss to 12-16 Presbyterian Blue Hose. Oh yea then there’s what happens when ACC play begins. They have only been with in 13 points of their conference foes twice, a one point loss to Miami and an actual win over Virginia. Wake Forest scored just 39 points against Georgia Tech in a 35 point loss. In fact they have 7 losses this year of 20 or more points. Including thrilling games versus Virginia Tech ( 29 point loss ), Florida State ( 24 point loss ), North Carolina State ( 21 and 25 point losses ), and Maryland ( 19 and 21 point losses ). Yea firing a guy who struggles in tournament play but wins 20 games for this guy was a brilliant move.

#1 – Auburn Tigers

Losses to Samford ( 12-15 overall, 4-11 Southern ), Campbell ( 12-15 overall, 6-11 Atlantic Sun), North Carolina – Asheville ( 13-12 overall, 8-7 Big South), and Presbyterian. Need I go on? Auburn might be the best in the BCS in football but maybe they could have used a little of that Cam Newton pay check to help out new coach Tony Barbee get some help. Auburn is 2-9 in the SEC, 9-16 overall but are 0-2 against the Atlantic Sun conference ( Jacksonville to go with Campbell ). A 31 point loss to Ole Miss, 19 point loss to Mississippi State, and oh yea they are the only team on this list to lose to someone else on this list. A 62-55 defeat versus LSU. All that said it’s funny but what put Auburn a head of everyone else is a win….a 4 point overtime win against a 2-24, 0-15 Southern team named Georgia Southern. I mean how is a team that lost by 11 to the second worst team in that powerhouse Southern conference and needed OT to beat the worst team in the Southern conference. If that doesn’t scream most putrid team of all the power conference schools I don’t know what does.
