An overall slow day in sports history today but that doesn’t mean it’s completely without some ( not many ) noteworthy moments.

On this day in 1943 the Yankee great “Jumpin” Joe DiMaggio enlists in the US Army. DiMaggio would return back to baseball in 1946 at the age of 31 to hit .290 and 25 home runs, 90 RBIs.

Today in 1962 Wilt Chamberlain, then with the Philadelphia Warriors dropped 67 points on the St. Louis Hawks. While Chamberlain was just in his 3rd season in the NBA, “The Big Dipper” would go on to average a career best 50.4 points per game at the end of the season.

In 1968 in Springfield, Massachusetts the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame opened its first public facility. Since the doors were officially opened in 1959 three hundred and one players, coaches, and teams have been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
