Acid Flashback: February 16th

Jimmy Ellis won the heavyweight title in an elimination tournament for Ali’s vacated belt, but Joe Frazier had declined to participate. So on this day in 1970 Frazier recorded a TKO over  Ellis in the 5th round in Madison Squire Garden to win the heavyweight title for his first time.

In 1972 Wilt Chamberlain became the first player in NBA history to surpass to 30,000 point mark ( in just 940 games ) versus the Phoenix Suns. Chamberlain would finish his career with 31, 419, while since him four more players have gone  on to top the 30,000 point mark ( Jordan, Dr.J, Karl Malone, Abdul-Jabbar )

A then NBA record crowd of  43, 816 filled the Pontiac Silverdome in 1985 to watch the Philadelphia 76ers defeat the Detroit Pistons 125-114. The record would go on to be broken in the Silverdome when 61, 983 people came to watch the Pistons and Celtics three years later.

The Los Angles Lakers retired Magic Johnson’s number 32 jersey on this date in 1992, just 2 months after being forced to retire due to HIV.

NHL league commissioner Gry Bettman announced the cancellation of their 2004-2005 season,  becoming  the first North American professional sports league to cancel a season due to a labor dispute.
